A Wonderful Gift

1909 Utah Association of the Deaf Convention

Did you know that…

The first Deaf president of the Utah Association of the Deaf (UAD) was a woman named Elizabeth DeLong – This is noteworthy, as women were not granted the right to vote for a decade until the ratification of the 19th amendment in 1920, and Deaf women members were not allowed to vote in the National Association of the Deaf (NAD) election until 1964. Elizabeth was also the first Deaf female NAD state association president in the entire nation. On a side note, Utah women were the first in the United States to legally vote in modern American history in 1870.

Our current President, Kim Lucas, is the second woman to be the president of UAD after over 100 years of men serving as the president.

a message from the president

Happy New Year - 2022!

Welcome to another new year!  It is amazing how the world changed dramatically in a short amount of time amid the pandemic. A raging COVID virus, Omicron, took over. UAD is not allowing this virus to stop us yet and we will continue with caution as the year unfolds!

As of December 2021 board retreat, UAD board members and I are looking forward to serving all Deaf/Hard of Hearing Utahns for the next term.  We have exciting plans for you all!  Now, the future board meetings will be held virtually again for the time being because the Covid numbers in Utah are so high. We are all still available by email, social media or videophone, so don't hesitate to reach out with questions. By the way, adhere to the mask mandate of the counties where you reside.  Please mask up and stay safe.

In light of the current numbers of COVID cases in Utah, all in-person events will be determined case by case as the time goes by.  An update will be posted on Facebook or in the e-blast as restrictions are lifted.

Despite the numbers, we want to give everyone something to look forward to and there are some excellent activities in the planning stages for the next two years. Keep in mind they will be subjected to change.  We will keep everyone as safe as possible while we continue to learn socializing in our new world.
Wishing you all a wonderful, prosperous, healthy and happy New Year.
