the Leadership
Academy for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing is for YOU!
This training includes eight two-day sessions between September and April. Sessions begin Thursday at 5 pm and conclude Friday at 5 pm. Field trips and guest speakers in their fields are added. This training is provided at no cost to participants.
LADHH is:
...Innovative leadership training that educates
people to be community leaders.
...Information and resources to assist
deaf self-advocates and parents of young children with hearing loss to obtain the best services
for themselves or others.
...Program designed to give individuals the
necessary skills to effectively work with legislators, state agencies, and others whose
decisions and actions will have an impact on the lives of persons with hearing loss.
The Leadership Academy for the
Deaf and Hard of Hearing was first organized in 2002 for the purpose of educating Deaf
individuals, Parents, Hard of Hearing, Interpreters, or any other individuals interested
in learning current issues, Deaf Culture, Assistive Technologies, Deaf History, Deaf
Advocacy, Leadership Skills in the deaf Community, Bylaws, and any other deaf related
topics in the world we live in. LADHH is sponsored by the Robert G. Sanderson
Community Center for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing and the Utah Association for the Deaf.
The Academy takes place at the
Robert G. Sanderson Community Center for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing every month for
approximately 6 - 8 months. A typical session begins around 5:00 p.m. and ends around 9:00
p.m.on a given Thursday then continues at 8:00 a.m. and ends around5:00 p.m. on the
following Friday. Training is provided at no cost to the participant. Each participant
must provide his/her own transportation and babysitting.
Each session will focus on a given
topic such as Advocacy, Education, Relay Services of the U.S., Deaf History, etc. Guest
speakers will be invited from the appropriate field of topic.
Each student is expected to be
committed to this academy in order to graduate. Only two session absences is allowed
during the entire Academy year. Each student will be exposed to a vast amount of
information concerning various issues, topics, and situations. Sometimes students are
given information that is never before known to the general deaf population.
