Parents of Young Children with Hearing Loss; Most Preferable
They are receptive to new approaches and best practices, in a position to make
the greatest changes over the life span of their children, and not locked into the status
quo.
Self-Advocates
Select those adults with hearing loss are ready and willing to take on the system and work
and live in the community.
Not Involved in Advocacy Organizations -- New Blood
Lots of folks are already active advocates. Invest our funding in those who are
inexperienced!
Ethnic Minority Representation
The makeup of this class should reflect the makeup of the general population.
Male/Female Mix
Lots of moms apply. The programs also need dads. Have a fair ratio of male to female
within the self advocate population, too.
Cross Hearing Loss Representation
Ensure that the hearing loss of the participants selected represent a wide range of types
and severity.
Geographic Representation
LADHH participants should represent all parts of our target area.
Motivated for Systems Change vs. Person Gain
Try to select applicants who want to go beyond their own personal issues.
Honor to Serve With and For All
Choose participants who embrace the philosophy that people with hearing loss belong in the
community, not in segregated settings.
Enthusiasm for Learning
Participants are eager to learn and are open to new ways of thinking!
Evidence of Commitment to Long Term Advocacy Efforts
Systems change can be a long term process. Participants need to be tenacious and
determined
