2005 Western Academic Bowl

The Western Region Bowl is coordinated by the Gallaudet University Regional Center at Ohlone College and hosted at a different site each year. Previous events have been held in Arizona, Oregon, California, Washington and Colorado.

The Utah Association for the Deaf, in conjunction with the Robert G. Sanderson Community Center for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing and Utah Schools for the Deaf and the Blind, will be hosting Gallaudet University's 9th annual Western Academic Bowl February 17 through 19, 2005. It is the first time that this event is hosted in Utah.

This event draws upon the community to participate as volunteers as well as to attend. The usual number of volunteers is approximately 100-125 for the three-day event. In order to put on a successful Academic Bowl, we will need a lot of help and sponsorship. We anticipate we will be bringing 16 teams to Taylorsville for this event. With the maximum participation we could have 80 participants and 32 coaches.

The purpose of the Academic Bowl is to encourage students to develop a greater respect for knowledge; to promote interscholastic competition in academic areas of study and interests; to stimulate intellectual growth and achievement; and to create awareness of the outstanding academic programs in secondary schools and programs for the Deaf. The Academic Bowl is an academic quiz game resembling "Jeopardy". It is a question and answer game of general knowledge and quick recall and covers facts in many disciplines including U.S. and World History, Language and Literature, Science, Nature, Technology, U.S. and World Geography, The Arts, Mathematics, Current Events, Deaf Studies, Popular Culture, Leisure, and Sports.

Every school program for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing in the Western and the Pacific Regions are eligible to bring a team to the Western Regional Academic Bowl. The Western Region is comprised of the following states: Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, New Mexico, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, Washington and Wyoming. The Pacific Region is comprised of Hawaii and the Pacific Islands (territories). The team may be from a school or from the district.

The first and second place teams will represent the Western Region in the 9th annual National High School Academic Bowl for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Students at Gallaudet University in Washington, D.C. This school year the Nationals will be held April 23 -26, 2005.

On Friday evening, February 18, a big name entertainment team will be on hand to entertain teenagers. People from the deaf and hard of hearing community are welcome to attend.

Note: Last year’s regional academic bowl was held at the California School for the Deaf in Riverside, CA. Sixteen teams registered for the competition, bringing 72 students and 32 coaches. Also in attendance were several families who made the trip in support of their children. The champion of the 2004 Western Academic Bowl, Colorado School for the Deaf team, went on to the national Academic Bowl – and captured the national championship. The 2nd place team won 3rd place at the national Academic Bowl.
