Philippe Montalette

President

Philippe was born in Paris, France. His childhood was spent in New York City and London, England. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Information Technology from the University of Phoenix. He and his family moved to Utah in January 2007 due to a transfer to Sorenson Communications in Salt Lake City, where he is now a database report writer. Their older daughter resides in Bay Area, California; their son is currently a student at Gallaudet and the younger daughter lives with them and attends a college in Utah. He and Yvonne have known each other for over 25 years. They reside in Lehi and love their two hyper little dogs. They love to travel all over the world and enjoy different cultures and history. Philippe is passionate about food, travelling, and hiking.


Eleanor ‘Eli’ McCowan

Vice-Presidentt

After growing up in a beach community in Western Michigan, Eli was a nomad in various states for several decades including years at Gallaudet, where she graduated with a bachelor's degree in social work. She moved to Utah in 2000. She has worked at Robert G. Sanderson Community Center of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing in Taylorsville since then, where she is currently its program manager. Eli is the owner of two beloved cats, Chipo, the huggable & drooling big sister, and Stormie, the crazy-running and meowing younger sister. Joining her cats are two young dachshunds, Kimba, the hyperactive and best ASL-reader in signs, and Macki, the doting, loveable dog with deep eyes. They keep Eli walking miles a great deal. Her life’s pleasures are reading, swimming, quilting, challenging crafts, and gardening. Her life philosophy, by John Dewey, is "Arriving at one goal is the starting point to another”.


Marion West

Secretary

Marion was born and raised in Salt Lake City. She became deaf at 2 1/2 due to high fever from red measles. She attended the Utah School for the Deaf in Ogden; during her last year of high school, she attended West High School with no ASL interpreter (not provided at that time). She received diplomas from both West High and USD in 1949. She attended Gallaudet College ('49-'53), and received a Bachelor of Arts degree in education. She married Earl Malloy from Nebraska in 1954. She has six hearing children. She is now a grandmother of 22 and great grandmother of 17. Marion worked for the federal government for 12 years: Department of Agriculture in Washington DC; Typist at White Sands Missile Range, New Mexico; Editorial Assistant and librarian at the Department of the Navy in Sunnyvale CA; mail and file clerk at Bureau of Land Management District Office in Salt Lake City. She lived in California for 28 years before moving back to Salt Lake City in 1990. In 1991, she married Varian LaVearl West; he passed away in 2005. She has been president, vice president, secretary and treasurer of several organizations both at Gallaudet, in California and here in Utah. Also she tutored and taught sign language classes. She retired in 1996 from work.


Adele Sigoda

Treasurer

A native of New York City, she and her husband Scott moved to Utah in 1976 for the mountains and skiing. They are the parents of three handsome and active sons, two of whom are Californians. Adele was a founder of Miss Deaf Utah Pageant in 1979. She worked at the University of Utah Library for eight years before becoming the manager of UAD Bookstore in 2007. Adele is very involved in many deaf community activities. She enjoys reading, jigsaw puzzles, crossword puzzles, Sudoku, Scrabble, and bowling. With her family, it’s beach cruiser biking! She is a retired skier!


Jodi Kinner

Board Member at Large

Jodi was born in Germany and raised as an Air Force brat. Her educational background includes oral and mainstream schools and Gallaudet University with both Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Social Work. Shortly after graduating in 2000 and moving to Utah, she became a disability services advisor Salt Lake Community. She has served on the Utah Interpreter Certification Advisory Board, JMS Utah Deaf Education and Literacy, Inc. Board, USDB Institutional Council/Advisory Council and Utah Deaf Education Core Group. As a parent of two deaf children, Joshua and Danielle, she has been an advocate for deaf education in Utah. This has led to her involvement in numerous educational committees, including the USDB Legislative Task Force and the National Agenda: Moving Forward on Achieving Educational Equality for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Students. She is married to Duane Kinner. During her spare time, she enjoys running, snow skiing, reading, and working on genealogy/history. As an amateur historian, her true passion is being a history detective.


Rob Kerr

Board Member at Large

Rob originally was from Utah, and for over 25 years lived in other states; he returned home from Wisconsin in 1995. He graduated from Seattle Community College in 1979 with a certificate in computer information systems, and went on to Gallaudet University, graduating in 1984 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in economics. He has had various jobs as computer clerks at Naval base departments and private companies. He has been involved in sports and deaf organizations. He is happy to be an UAD board member at large for a two year term after two terms as UAD president. He is always interested in participating in the deaf community as he is able. He retired from his part-time work at MediaOne (formerly Newspaper Agency Corporation) in 2008. He loves the outdoors - camping and biking. He has been working on his family genealogy as time permits, yet he is looking for a new hobby that will keep him busy.


Abel Martinez

Board Member at Large

His name is Juan, but everyone calls him Abel. He was born in New Mexico, and his family moved to Ogden so he could attend Utah Schools for the Deaf. He graduated in 1968. He graduated from West Valley Occupational Center in Los Angeles with a certificate, and worked for Dynamic Science Inc. as electronic technician for 13 years. He and Ana lived and worked in Los Angeles for 24 years. He and Ana have been married for 36 years. They have been in Salt Lake City valley since 2003. He is active with the Bonneville Senior Club for the Deaf, and was vice president for a term. He bowls in the weekly bowling league. He has worked for Newspaper Agency Corporation for more than one year. His hobby is quilting.


Yvonne Montalette

Board Member at Large

Yvonne is native born and bred Californian. She grew up in San Jose which is well known as Silicon Valley, the historical era at Bay Area during feminism rights, Vietnam riots, Harvey Milk’s movement and Hippies’ peace freedoms during her early age and middle of teenage period. She moved to two states: Arizona and Texas in the middle of teen and early twenties, moving back to her beloved home state when she was in late twenties. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in communication arts at Gallaudet University in 2001. She worked for California School for the Deaf in Fremont for five years, then Philippe swept her off her feet to get married. They moved to Utah for Philippe’s transfer to Sorenson Communication in Utah. They live in Lehi, with two hyper little dogs, and two mature cats. They enjoy traveling, exploring the world cultures, and are also interested in historical events that have happened here in America.


Stanley O'Neal

Board Member at Large

Stan was born in Phoenix, Arizona on August 3, 1937. He attended Glendale Elementary School for the first five years, and then attended the Arizona School for the Deaf from 1948 to 1957 where he graduated with honors. He was president of the Phoenix Association of the Deaf for two terms. He and Charlotte and their two little sons moved to Salt Lake City in 1968.



Robert G. Sanderson

President Emeritus

 

As elder statesman for the board, Sandie brings a wealth of experience in vocational rehabilitation, sign language teaching, and national organizations for the deaf. Sandie, who hails from Nevada, graduated from Utah School for the Deaf and since then has gone on to Gallaudet University, California State University, University of Utah and Brigham Young University, working his way up to the doctorate level. His employment career has been mainly in Utah vocational rehabilitation, with three years as the first director of the Utah Community Center for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing. The Utah Community Center for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing was recently renamed in his honor. Sandie has an adult son and two grandchildren, the latter to spoil. His longhaired dachshund, Tiny Tim, keeps him company.
